YOOYOUNG is an artist who explores temporality, materiality, and layers of documentation through diverse media, including painting, photography, and video. I reinterpret traditional materials such as Korean paper and ink wash painting, integrating them with the sequential nature of photography and video to construct visual narratives. I experiment with the tension between mediums—flat versus moving images, stillness versus flow—expanding the relationships among materials, forms, and perceptions.
Living near the Nakdong River estuary, I draw inspiration from observing natural transformations and the activities of living organisms, documenting their changes over time. Recently, I have focused on themes of disappearance, decay, and regeneration through the materiality of ice, exploring the interconnectedness between humans and nature. My representative video work, Light Enters the Crumbling Frame, captures seascapes and tidal flats, reflecting ecological ethics and existential sensitivity while fluidly traversing the boundaries between traditional painting and digital media.
